ABOUT DEAFOP

Problem Statement

In Kenya, persons with hearing impairments make up a minority population of 0.7% in a predominantly hearing world, where they face systemic alienation due to language and communication barriers with most Information and services often being delivered in written or audio formats and not in Sign Language ,with a general wrong assumption that sign language is a direct translation of written English which disregards that sign language is an independent language with its unique syntax, grammar, and cultural context.
These barriers begin early, with many Deaf children experiencing delays in language acquisition due to limited access to sign language resources and deepens further in education system which lacks sign language learning platforms and accessible educational materials perpetuating poor learning outcomes for Deaf students .

This is evident in Kenya with a consistent historical record of low grades with most averaging at D-, with no structured transition plans for skills development or higher education.

This problem leads us to raise critical question: Is true learning taking place? and, more importantly, how we can make learning accessible, engaging, and impactful for Deaf students informing our Mission and work.

 FOUNDING STORY

Deaf Outreach Program (DEAFOP) began with a simple but powerful vision: to bridge the gaps in opportunities and development faced by Kenya’s Deaf community. Under the leadership of Ann Gloria Njoki, and with the collaboration of Deaf and hearing community, parents of Deaf children, educators, and Deaf schools, we set out to create meaningful change.

What started as a passion for listening, learning, and breaking barriers has grown into a movement that continues to transform lives. Over the years, DEAFOP has built impactful programs, fostered valuable partnerships, and embraced innovative, sign language-accessible technologies, all aimed at enhancing education and information access for the Deaf.

At the heart of DEAFOP’s work is a commitment to inclusion and advocacy. By blending research, media, and technology, we champion Deaf rights and create sustainable pathways to a more inclusive future.
